Vol. 379 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Zoo.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance the relationship between Dublin Zoo and the Office of Public Works as the controlling body for the Phoenix Park, Dublin 8; if the Dublin Zoo pays a rent for the site it occupies in the Phoenix Park; if so, the amount; if his attention has been drawn to plans to change the status of Dublin Zoo to that of a limited company; his views on such a change in status; if such a change in status would require a change in the relationship between the Dublin Zoo and the Office of Public Works; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The relationship of the Commissioners of Public Works, as agents for the Minister for Finance, to the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland in respect of the lands occupied by the society at the Phoenix Park is that of licensor to licensee. No rent is payable in respect of the park lands occupied by the society. While I am aware that consideration is being given by the society to a change of status it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the matter at this time. Any such change would affect the licence which was granted to the president of the society, as such, by the Minister for Finance.
