Vol. 379 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Gallery Paintings.

35.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to reports that paintings in the National Gallery in Dublin 2 are flaking, cracking and warping because of failures in the air-conditioning system; the measures which are being taken to protect the paintings in the gallery; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

54.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that proper safeguards are taken to protect the collection of paintings in the National Gallery, Dublin 2 by the installation of proper thermostatically controlled heating and accurate humidity systems; and if he has any plans for improving the general decoration of this gallery.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 54 together.

I am aware of the reports in the media to the effect that a number of the paintings in the National Gallery have deteriorated due to deficiencies in the air-conditioning system. I and the Commissioners of Public Works have been aware for some time of the existence of a number of major problems in the National Gallery including the need for improved environmental conditions. The Commissioners have drawn up a programme to completely refurbish the gallery on a phased basis including the provision of a modern air-conditioning system which will enable the temperature and humidity levels to be maintained within the acceptable range. The proposed scheme would also include redecorating of the gallery.

Planning for Phase I incorporating the most urgently required work is at an advanced stage and subject to a decision on funding for the project in 1989-91 a contract for this work could be placed towards the end of this year. There are funds available from the national lottery to meet costs arising this year. Phase I works would take about two and a half years to complete from the placing of a contract.
