Vol. 379 No. 10

Written Answers. - European Internal Market.

13.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline the nature and extent of the discussions and consultations he has had with representatives of Irish industry with a view to Ireland's optimum preparedness for the open market in 1992; and the initiatives the Government intends to take to give leadership in this respect.

The process of completing the internal market has been ongoing for some years and my Department have had overall and specific consultations with the relevant representative bodies of the Irish business sector in this regard. Sectoral interests continue to be consulted on an ongoing basis in regard to the various specific proposals as they are put forward by the Commission in this context.

All relevant sectors of Irish economic life need to be fully aware of what specifically the completion of the internal market entails and in this regard my Department have been in consultation with bodies such as the Confederation of Irish Industry and the Association of Chambers of Commerce of Ireland, as to how best to intensify this information and consultation process. Further consultations in this regard are being held.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware from questions previously answered in this House, a campaign is being launched by An Taoiseach this summer, to raise the level of awareness of this matter among our various economic sectors and to encourage them to make the necessary preparations. The Deputy may be assured that I and other Ministers will be actively involved in this campaign.
