Vol. 380 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Kildare Pollution Problem.

22.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the pollution problem that exists at Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare, which poses an obvious threat to fish life; if he has received any reports of fish killed in the river Liffey as a result of such pollution; if he intends taking legal action to ensure the resolution of the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of a silt problem arising from Dublin Corporation's water treatment plant at Ballymore Eustace. The possible impact of this problem on fish life has been under continuing investigation by the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board. However, no fish kills have been detected here and the board are not contemplating any legal proceedings at present. I understand that Dublin Corporation hope to have their sludge de-watering plant — which has already been constructed at the site — in operation shortly and that this should solve the problem.
