Vol. 380 No. 3

Written Answers. - Appreciation of Trees.

47.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has a policy of developing an awareness to the value of trees; and if his Department have issued any young saplings through the local authorities housing sections.

I am pursuing a policy of promoting public awareness of the importance of the environment generally which would include an appreciation of the value of trees. Local authorities play an important role in the implementation of this policy. The local environment campaigns which they have been asked to organise often include activities such as tree planting ceremonies, landscaping public open spaces, tree weeks, etc. Towards the end of the year, I will be making awards, totalling £15,000 to the local authorities with the best local campaigns. In addition, I recently announced the allocation of funds from the national lottery for amenity and recreational projects many of which contained landscaping proposals or were devoted entirely to the planting and landscaping of amenity areas.
