Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Report on Prisoner.

73.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a full medical report on a prisoner (details supplied) who subsequently died, was not made available to the director of the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum, Dublin 14, when requested by him; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person referred to by the Deputy was committed to prison on 10 August 1984 and was serving a sentence of eight years imprisonment. While in custody he was a patient of the medical officer at Portlaoise prison and he was also seen, occasionally, by the consultant psychiatrist who attends the prison. Following a review of his case in 1986, involving staff of the Central Mental Hospital, he was sent to that hospital on 15 October 1986, for treatment. He remained in that hospital until 18 November 1986, when he was returned to Portlaoise prison.

On 19 September 1987, he was sent to the Central Mental Hospital for treatment. He remained there until 28 September 1987, when he was returned to the prison. He was again sent to the Central Mental Hospital on 7 October 1987 where he was found dead on 10 October 1987.

A request for a report was received after the transfer on 7 October and was in course of preparation on 10 October.
