Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unpaid Parking Fines.

74.

asked the Minister for Justice the amounts outstanding in unpaid parking fines for 1987.

I assume that the question is intended to refer to "fine-on-the spot" notices issued in respect of parking offences and not to fines imposed by the court for such offences.

The total amount received by way of payment on foot of parking notices issued in 1987 by members of the Garda Síochána and Garda traffic wardens was approximately £2.33 million. The face value of notices issued in 1987 which are still outstanding is estimated at about £3.423 million. Summonses have been issued in connection with all outstanding notices in the Dublin Metropolitan Area and the great majority of them in the rest of the country. While it is a matter for the courts whether a fine will be imposed in these cases, it is to be expected that a considerable amount of further revenue will be collected in due course as court fines.
