Vol. 380 No. 6

Written Answers. - Long Distance Walking Routes.

17.

asked the Minister for Education who is responsible for the development for tourism purposes of long distance walking routes in non-forest areas; and if she will outline the Government's plans in this regard.

Responsibility for the development of walking routes rests with the long distance walking routes committee of Cospóir, the National Sports Council. In carrying out this responsibility the committee co-operates with Bord Fáilte, Government Departments, local authorities and community organisations.

At present there are eight walks in 14 counties. It is intended to continue the development of walking routes on a nationwide basis. Cospóir are co-operating with Bord Fáilte on the preparation of an effective marketing strategy to encourage tourists to use these walks which are set in areas of great scenic beauty.
