Vol. 380 No. 6

Written Answers. - EC Integrated Market Campaign.

27.

asked the Minister for Education the role which is envisged for her Department in the awareness campaign to prepare for 1992 and the full integration of the European market which has been announced by the Taoiseach and several other Ministers.

The awareness campaign referred to by the Deputy will be aimed mostly at the business and industrial communities to alert them to the new possibilities opening to them after the removal of the barriers to trade etc. My Department in its role will be the supplier to business and industry of persons with the necessary language and other skills who will be qualified to take their place in firms and take advantage of the new market opportunities. My Department have always been conscious of the need to promote European awareness in schools and in recent years great efforts have been made to improve the teaching of modern European languages. I hope to continue to intensify these efforts particularly in the area of the lesser taught European languages, so that our young people will be well equipped to meet the challenges which will be presented to them.
