asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the number of private consultants who have been engaged by his Department since 10 March 1987; the reason for their appointment; the terms and conditions of such appointment; the fee liability incurred to date; the fees paid to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No private consultants have been engaged by my Department since 10 March 1987.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of private consultants who have been engaged by his Department since 10 March, 1987; the reason for their appointment; the terms and conditions of such appointment; the fee liability incurred to date; the fees paid to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Four private consultants have been engaged by my Department since 10 March 1987 as follows;

(a) A company to advertise and short-list candidates for the post of Director of the bovine disease eradication programme.

Fee liability is £11,000, of which £6,500 has been paid to date.

(b) A company and individual to deal with work in connection with legal proceedings taken against the Department and to advise on the financial and technical aspects of the case.

The fee paid to the company was £11,469 and £521 was paid to the individual.

(c) A company to prove certain technical equipment at the Department's veterinary research laboratory and bring it into line with current British standards.

Fee liability is £8,564; nil paid to date.
