asked the Minister for Defence the number of private consultants who have been engaged by his Department since 10 March 1987; the reason for their appointment; the terms and conditions of such appointment; the fee liability incurred to date; the fees paid to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): Four such consultants have been engaged by my Department since the date in question as follows: (i) One to assist in the development of a computerised information system for the Naval Service and the Air Corps, for a fee of £3,000, subject to the usual conditions for the engagement of business consultants in the public service; (ii) Three to design and supervise construction projects, for fees amounting to £28,000, subject to the usual conditions as agreed with the Institute of Engineers of Ireland.

No fees have been paid to date.

asked the Minister for Education the number of private consultants which have been engaged by her Department since 10 March 1987; the reason for their appointment; the terms and conditions of such appointment; the fee liability incurred to date; the fees paid to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Three private management consultants have been employed by my Department since 10 March 1987.

The purposes for which these consultants have been employed are as follows: 1. to assist a working group to consider and make recommendations on the commercial development of sporting activities and facilities. 2. to carry out a market and financial study for the proposed national sports centre.

3. (a) to provide technical advice and assistance in the application of a formal system development methodology in relation to the computerisation of the Certificate Examinations. (b) to investigate current computer systems and associated documentation, including formulation of a work plan.

The terms and conditions of employment are to complete the requested consultancy appointment, at a fee rate which has been specified and agreed.

The fee liability incurred to date is £100,000 and the fees paid to date have amounted to £19,000.
