Vol. 381 No. 4

Written Answers. - Trade Links with China.

14.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details of his recent visit to China; the export orders, if any, which were received; if any new export opportunities were identified; if any import opportunities from China were identified; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I led a trade mission, organised by CTT, to the People's Republic of China from 11 to 13 April 1988.

Eighteen exporters took part in the mission which visited Beijing and Shanghai. We had discussions with the Vice Premier, Ministers, Vice Ministers and representatives of the Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Ministry and related entities.

Orders for exports of consumer products, refrigerators and electronic equipment valued at IR £4.2 million were written during the mission. Further export opportunities valued at over £7 million were identified for telecommunications and other electronic equipment, chemicals and engineering products and for products and services to the Chinese National Airline and the Chinese Aviation Authority.

The primary objective of the project was the development of exports as opposed to imports.

The participating companies and myself are satisfied with the outcome. I am confident that the mission will have enhanced co-operation and trade between Ireland and the People's Republic of China.
