Vol. 381 No. 4

Written Answers. - Kilkenny Design Centre Employees.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of employees of the Kilkenny Design Centre who since 12 March 1987 (a) accepted voluntary redundancy (b) were made redundant on a compulsory basis and (c) ceased employment for any other reason.

I understand that 40 people have ceased their employment with Kilkenny Design Workshops Limited since March 1987. Compensation under the Government voluntary redundancy scheme was provided in respect of 29 of these redundancies. My understanding is that the other 11 ceased for other reasons but this is a day-to-day matter for the board and management of KDW.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the reason for the delay in filling the vacant position of chief executive officer of the Kilkenny Design Centre.

91.

andMr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there is a vacancy in the Office of the Managing Director of the Kilkenny Design Workshop; if so, the length of time there has been such a vacancy; if he has any function in the filling thereof; and when the vacancy is likely to be filled.

I propose to take Oral Question No. 16 and Written Question No. 91 together.

The appointment of a Chief Executive by the board of Kilkenny Design Workshops Ltd. requires my consent. In view of the losses incurred by the company over the past two years it was clear to me that a radical review of Kilkenny Design Workshop's activities was necessary and I could not agree to the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer until this review had been completed and the future direction of the company decided. As I indicated last week an Acting Chief Executive has now been appointed.
