Vol. 381 No. 4

Written Answers. - North-East Dublin Job Creation.

28.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the plans there are for industrial development and job creation in north-east Dublin in view of the serious unemployment situation; if there are any plans to use Dublin Airport as a centre for industrial development; if any consideration has been given to establishing a Shannon-type scheme around Dublin Airport; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Industrial Development Authority has statutory authority for the promotion and development of industry in north-east Dublin and I have no direct function in respect of this aspect of the question. However, I understand from the Authority that it is continuing to actively promote north-east Dublin as a suitable location for industrial development.

There are no plans to establish a Shannon-type scheme around Dublin Airport. The Shannon Free Zone and the Development Company were established to ensure the survival of Shannon Airport, a consideration that does not arise in the case of Dublin Airport.

Naturally, location near an international airport is an incentive for industry to establish in north Dublin and the IDA exploit this factor fully in their promotional efforts for the area.
