Vol. 381 No. 4

Written Answers. - Church Properties.

59.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to recent statements made at the Synod of the Church of Ireland in connection with the large number of church properties which are now in a dangerous state of repair due to the reduction in congregations; if he will enter into discussions with representatives of the Church of Ireland to find a way in which the buildings belonging to the Church of Ireland which are no longer required for ecclesiastical purposes and which are at risk can be preserved for the rest of the community as they form an integral part of the nation's environmental heritage; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of newspaper reports of discussions which took place at the recent Church of Ireland Synod in relation to churches falling into disrepair due to declining congregations.

The National Monuments Acts provide that any building, which is for the time being habitually used for ecclesiastical purposes, cannot be afforded State protection as a National Monument.

As to buildings which cease to be used for ecclesiastical purposes, it was the practice in the past for the Representative Body of the Church of Ireland to inform the Commissioners of Public Works of impending church closures and to seek their advice as to whether the buildings or part thereof were worthy of preservation. I understand that the National Monuments Advisory Council are examining the present situation and it would be premature for me to consider entering into discussions with the representative body until the council have completed their deliberations.
