Vol. 381 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Schemes.

3.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will list all Government schemes, policies and practices which have the effect of reducing the number on the unemployment register other than jobs which attract A rate social insurance contributions; and if he will give an estimate in each case of the numbers by which the register has been reduced.

The tabular statement circulated with this reply gives information on the programmes which do not involve payment of Social Welfare Class "A" PRSI rate — primarily training programmes and the social employment and enterprise schemes. The table also gives the number on these programmes and the estimated percentage of participants who were on the live register prior to the programmes.

For a number of reasons it is difficult to estimate how many people would have been on the live register had they not gone on a manpower programme. There is no certainly that if a person had gone on a FÁS programme he or she would have remained on the live register. The following information is therefore the best information that can be given to the question.

Can I ask the Minister what is the total number of people listed in the tabular statement?

Under the FÁS training programme the total is 7,753 and under the employment schemes, 11,568. There are a number of other courses under CERT.

Does the Minister have a global figure for everything on the list?

There are a number of schemes included and I might mislead the Deputy if I give a figure. I will supply the information to the Deputy when it is available.

The Deputy should await the information contained in the tabular statement.

In the monthly returns on the live register could we also be given the number of jobs created in any month?

That is a separate question. I do not think you could distinguish the number of jobs from the various schemes and programmes.
