Vol. 382 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sika Deer.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance if consideration has been given to the transfer of surplus sika deer from other areas to the Nephin Beg range, County Mayo; if any proposals exist in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have no plans to introduce sika deer to the Nephin Beg range at present.

Wild deer, in common with other wild animals, will colonise areas which are suitable for their breeding and feeding requirements. In general, this process is allowed to follow its natural course unless a species is under particular threat. Sika deer are under no such threat.
