Vol. 382 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rural Development.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the range of benefits available as a result of having the Barony of Erris, County Mayo included as a pilot area for integrated rural development under the EC scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The objective of the integrated rural development programme is to facilitate and stimulate the community's own efforts for the economic and social improvement of the area through wealth and job creation, in close liaison both with the existing advisory and development agencies and the local voluntary organisations.

It will be for the inhabitants of each pilot area to decide on the priorities and to work out, with the guidance and assistance of the co-ordinator who will be appointed to assist them, the approach and the development programme best suited to the wishes, capabilities and resources of the community within the context of the overall objectives.

Ireland is the first of the member states to undertake these steps, following the EC Summit decision on increased structural funds. The experience gained from the implementation of the programme will be of great advantage when the new initiative on rural development is launched at European Community level.
