Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

34.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of recipients of deserted wife's benefit in Galway city and Galway county areas.

On 31 December 1987 there were 170 women in receipt of deserted wife's benefit and 240 women in receipt of deserted wife's allowance in Galway city and county.

Separate figures for Galway city are not available.

35.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason the disability benefit payments of a person (details supplied) in County Waterford have been reduced from £42.40 per week to £21.30; if he will resume payment of the full amount; and if he will make statement on the matter.

The person concerned is in receipt of disability benefit since 13 June 1987 and she is currently paid to 10 June 1988, the date of the latest medical certificate received.

As she is in receipt of contributory widow's pension since January 1977 she was entitled to be paid disability benefit at half the personal rate. However, she was paid at the full rate up to 20 May 1988 and only at the correct rate since then. The overpayment, amounting to £1,022.97, will be recovered by deductions of £3 per week from future disability benefit payments.
