Vol. 382 No. 3

Written Answers. - Student Third Level Places.

9.

asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to avert some of the extraordinary pressure put on young second level students striving for third level places in Ireland.

The pressure on young people to which the Deputy refers derives mainly from the competitive nature of the selection system for third level places. A committee in my Department, and an inter-departmental committee, both at present in operation, are examining, inter alia, the possibility of achieving an increased throughput of students within existing resources. Any success in achieving such increased throughput would, to some extent at least, reduce the pressure on third level places.
