Vol. 382 No. 3

Written Answers. - Third-Level Institution Applications.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if she will introduce a common system of applications for all third-level institutions in the State before the next round of applications for the 1989-90 academic year.

The procedures for applying for places in third-level educational institutions are a matter for the institutions themselves. However, a working party in my Department has been examining these procedures with a view to making their operation simpler for prospective students and more comprehensible to the public at large. The working party has recently reported to me and its recommendations are being considered at present. Given the time scale of the applications procedure and the necessary consultations which would have to take place to introduce changes, I would not anticipate that new procedures would be in operation for students sitting the Leaving Certificate in 1989.
