The year-on-year changes in consumer prices in mid-February (the nearest date to 1 April for which data are available) over the past ten years were as follows: 1979, 10.8 per cent; 1980, 15.5 per cent; 1981, 21.0 per cent; 1982, 18.9 per cent; 1983, 12.5 per cent; 1984, 10.1 per cent; 1985, 6.2 per cent; 1986, 4.6 per cent; 1987, 3.4 per cent; 1988, 1.9 per cent.
