Vol. 382 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dorset Street (Dublin) Crime.

55.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the problem in Dorset Street, Dublin 1, regarding the upsurge in crime during recent weeks where a number of robberies, including armed robberies, have occurred and a gang of youths are attacking local businesses and whether there has been a reduction in the Garda presence as a result of their being redeployed to court duties; and if he will meet a deputation from the area and Deputy Michael Keating to discuss the problems being experienced by the traders in this area.

The Garda authorities have informed me that the number of crimes reported in the Dorset Street area in recent weeks does not indicate an upsurge in crime there. They have also informed me that, while a number of robberies were reported in the area so far this year, none of these were armed robberies and they are not aware of a significant problem being caused by any particular gang of youths.

The Garda authorities have assured me that there has been no redeployment of gardaí from the area or reduction of Garda presence and that Dorset Street, in fact, receives regular and special attention from foot and mobile patrols from both the Fitzgibbon Street and Mountjoy Stations and also from specialist units.

The Garda authorities have also informed me that the local officers are very much aware of the concern of the business community in the area about crime and have regular meetings with their representatives. I understand that a further meeting, which is the most appropriate way to deal with the matter, is due to be held in the very near future.
