Vol. 382 No. 3

Written Answers. - Refugee Status Request.

56.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason the request of a person (details supplied) from Ghana for refugee status has been refused; if he will reconsider this request; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The request for refugee status by the person from Ghana referred to in the question was refused because she did not qualify as a refugee under the terms of the United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees.

I do not intend to reconsider the request as the decision to refuse refugee status was taken after careful consideration of the person's case vis-à-vis the criteria for granting refugee status set out in the Convention and Protocol referred to above and after consultation with the London Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
