asked the Minister for Education the anticipated second-level school population on which the proposed and cancelled Kilcoole-Kilquade community college, County Wicklow was based.
Written Answers. - Proposed County Wicklow Community College.
The proposed new community college in the Kilcoole-Kilquade area of County Wicklow to accommodate 500 pupils was sanctioned by my Department in January 1985.
That decision was taken on the basis of the projected numbers of primary school leavers as outlined in the attached appendix, and anticipated substantial growth in population arising from major housing developments.
At that time the post primary pupils from Kilcoole-Kilquade were accommodated in neighbouring post primary centres. It is clear from the March 1988 projection of primary school leavers (also shown on the following appendix) that there has been no significant increase in the numbers of primary school leavers. The envisaged housing developments have not taken place. The continuing availability of places in neighbouring post primary schools was also a factor in my decision to cancel the proposed project.
