Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Hydro-Station Grants.

105.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the financial value of grants and other public money provided to establish a series of mini hydro-stations around the country over the past number of years.

In 1981 my Department held a competiton for the design and construction of small-scale hydro schemes. Over 80 entries were received out of which he received grants totalling £98,800.

In 1987 the EC approved grant-aid of £3.87 million under its VALOREN programme for the development of small-scale hydro electric facilities at 10 locations in Cork, Kerry, Leitrim and Donegal. These sites are being developed by the ESB over a five year period.

In addition to the above mentioned grant-aid, my Department paid £257,789 to An Foras Forbartha in the period 1982 to 1985 for a hydro resource survey which they carried out in conjunction with the ESB. This survey identified all prospective hydro-power sites with a potential power capacity in excess of 10KW.
