Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Environmental Impact Assessment.

121.

asked the Minister for the Environment the measures of national execution which Ireland proposes to take to implement the directive dealing with environmental affairs No. 85/337/EC of 27 June, 1985 which is due to come into effect on 3 July 1988; and if the terms of the directive apply as conditions to licences issued for mining and ore extraction in the counties of Galway and Mayo.

Proposals for giving effect to Directive 85/337/EEC concerning environmental impact assessment are currently being developed in my Department.

The granting of mining leases is a matter for the Minister for Energy. I understand, however, that no such leases have been issued in respect of the counties of Galway or Mayo since the adoption by the Council of the European Communities of Directive 85/337/EEC.
