Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin Tenant's Group Grant Application.

180.

asked the Minister for Education the reason an application by Cromcastle Tenants' Association, Coolock, Dublin 5 for a grant under the national lottery towards the provision of a holiday for needy children in the area was refused.

My Department provide support for youth activities in a number of ways. The main channel of assistance is the youth service grant scheme whereby voluntary national youth organisations receive an annual grant. My Department also allocate a sum annually to each vocational education committee for the support of local youth and sports activities. There are no funds available to me from which I could assist an individual club or group.

When Cromcastle Court Tenants' Group applied recently for financial assistance towards a summer project my Department referred them to two youth organisations which are grant aided by the Department and might be in a position to assist them, viz. Comhairle le Leas Óige which has responsibility for the support of local youth activities in the Dublin area and The Catholic Youth Council which offer help and advice to local community groups organising summer projects.
