Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Edenderry, Offaly, Vocational School.

216.

asked the Minister for Education, having regard to the serious state of disrepair of the 21 prefabricated buildings serving over 400 students and the permanent concrete classrooms serving over 100 students which comprise Edenderry vocational school, County Offaly, if her attention has been drawn to the fact that (1) the entire school is in a grossly inadequate and potentially dangerous state and (2) intermediate remedial works constitute a waste of funds; and in view of the crisis that exists at present, if she will give a commitment to advancing the development of the project at the earliest possible date.

I am fully aware of the accommodation situation at Edenderry vocational school and I have recently examined the position of this project in the context of the second level capital programme for 1988. On the basis of that examination, I have decided to advance this project and I have asked my Department to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that the architectural planning will be further advanced during the course of this year.

I must point out, however, that the funding of this project will have to be arranged so that expenditure involved on it this year will come within the financial allocation available for such capital projects in 1988.
