Vol. 382 No. 9

Written Answers. - Unmarried Mothers Allowance.

85.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he proposed to alter the conditions for payment of social assistance for single mothers, requiring them to register for unemployment benefit or assistance.

The purpose of the social assistance scheme for unmarried mothers is to provide such mothers with an income that will enable them to care for their children on a full time basis. I have no plans to require them to register as unemployed. To require them to do so would be contrary to the nature and purpose of the scheme.
