Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - Irish Brand Bacon.

27.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to reports that Danish bacon has been sold as Irish brand bacon in parts of the United States; the measures he is taking to have this practice ended; if he has made any representations to the Danish authorities on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the reports to which the Deputy refers. Officials of my Department have already taken up the matter with the Danish authorities and with a representative of the company involved in the trade.

It appears that the bacon in question was produced in Denmark and shipped directly to the United States by a company which are registered in Ireland. The information available to me suggests that neither EC or US regulations are being breached. I am, however, concerned that this trade is taking place. My Department have strongly urged the company to source their product in Ireland and my officials are keeping in constant touch with the people involved.

I am confident that, as more Irish pigmeat plants become USDA approved as a result of the modernisation and rationalisation programme now being pursued in the sector, Irish suppliers will be able to exploit this particular export opportunity.
