Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - New Bovine Disease.

34.

Mr. O'Keeffe

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the recent report in overseas journals of the danger of the new bovine disease known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE); and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the reports about the possible dangers of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

BSE is a condition of the nervous system. It was first identified in Great Britain in 1984. Studies are continuing as to its possible origin. While it has not been recorded in Ireland, over 500 cases have been confirmed in Great Britain. The authorities there have introduced certain protective measures. These are currently being discussed with representatives of my Department.
