Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - EC Free Food Scheme.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the present position in relation to the distribution of the EC free food scheme.

All arrangements for the distribution of intervention beef to certain social welfare recipients under the EC free food scheme have now been finalised. However, in view of the favourable weather conditions and the possibility that a number of recipients may not have suitable storage facilities for the meat, it has been decided to postpone distribution until the autumn. The distribution later in the year will be of far greater benefit to the families concerned. Once again, I would like to thank the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for agreeing to carry out this difficult operation, and the meat processors and cold stores for their co-operation. I should, of course, mention that hostels and shelters for homeless people, which are also included in the scheme, will continue to be supplied with beef and butter until the end of the year.
