Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - Non-Alcoholic Beers Excise Duty.

62.

asked the Minister for Finance in view of the problem of under-age drinking, the reason he does not take the non-alcoholic content of Kaliber beer into account when applying the same excise duty to it as to alcoholic drinks.

By virtue of the provisions of the Imposition of Duties (No. 258) (Beer) (No. 2) Order, 1982 (S.I. No. 37 of 1982), non-alcoholic beers, including the product referred to by the Deputy, bear a specially reduced excise duty charge of 37.2p per gallon, or 4.65p per pint. The excise duty charge borne by ordinary beer is, on average, approximately 36.8p per pint.
