Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dumping of Nuclear Waste.

94.

asked the Minister for Energy if his attention has been drawn to a report that a United Kingdom company (details supplied) has lodged an application to dump nuclear waste around Rockall; and the action he proposes to take in the matter.

In May 1988, a British company's application to NIREX to dump nuclear waste around Rockall was informally brought to my Department's attention. The matter was raised with the UK authorities and we have been assured that while such a project had been mooted by private interests, there are no proposals to proceed with such a development.

Any plan to dispose of nuclear waste in an area where it might pose a danger to the health and safety of the Irish people would, of course, be strenuously opposed by the Government.
