Vol. 382 No. 11

Written Answers. - Part-Time Job Incentive Scheme.

26.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the arrangements are in place for the operation of the part-time job incentive scheme; and the number of people it is estimated will participate in this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The part-time job incentive provides for certain categories of unemployed persons to take up part-time insurable employment and receive a special weekly supplement from my Department. The scheme is intended as a stepping stone towards obtaining full-time employment.

However, implementation of the scheme has been delayed pending further discussion with certain of the staff interests involved. These discussions are taking place and I am hopeful that outstanding issues will be resolved quickly.

It is not possible at this stage to say how many people will participate in the new scheme. I am aware, however, that the scheme has attracted considerable interest among unemployed people generally because it represents a new possibility for them to improve their situation by engaging in part-time work while continuing to receive an allowance from my Department. It is for this reason I will be pressing to have the scheme operational as soon as possible.
