Vol. 382 No. 11

Written Answers. - Clondalkin, Dublin, Paper Mills.

71.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, during a recent meeting with representatives of the former employees of Clondalkin Paper Mills, Dublin 22, he offered to visit those companies abroad who are currently showing an interest in purchasing the mills; and, if so, if he intends honouring this commitment and making the appropriate visits.

In a meeting with representatives of the former employees on 24 February 1988 I stressed that given the scale of Government expenditure to date, it could not get financially involved in the mills again. However, I also indicated my willingness to have discussions with a potential purchaser should it prove likely that such discussions would contribute significantly to the prospect of reopening of the mills.

That is still my position, and I will become involved if I am advised by the receiver or the IDA that such intervention would be useful.
