asked the Minister for Finance the number of (1) civil servants (2) local authority employees (3) health board employees and (4) employees of other health agencies as of 1 October each year from 1980 to 1988 inclusive; the number who have accepted the Government's voluntary redundancy/early retirement scheme in non-commercial State-sponsored companies; the number of non-industrial civil servants and those paid under (i) the health votes (ii) the education votes (iii) the local authority votes and (iv) other areas, who have accepted the scheme.

Statistical data on the numbers serving in each area of the public sector are available only in respect of 1 January for each of the years in question. The information sought by the Deputy is set out below on this basis. Figures for part-time employees have been converted to whole-time equivalents.
