Vol. 383 No. 3

Written Answers. - Urban Public Transport Subsidies.

49.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the ratio of subsidy to fare receipts for urban public transport in all EC capitals and Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm in 1987.

In 1987 the ratio of subsidy to fare receipts for urban public transport in Dublin was as follows:

In the case of Bus Átha Cliath the subvention payable was £16.4 million and this corresponds to 22 per cent of fare box receipts (£73.157 million).

In the case of DART the subvention payable was £6.272 million (excluding DART interest charges) and this corresponds to 85 per cent of fare box receipts (£7.351 million). Separate figures for other Dublin suburban rail services are not available.

Information concerning corresponding ratios for capitals of other countries is not available in my Department. I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Dáil Question No. 19 of 28 June 1988 in which I explained the need for caution in relation to international comparisons on the basis of the data available.
