Vol. 383 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Unemployment Levels.

83.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the current levels of unemployment in Clondalkin, Dublin 22.

84.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on current levels of unemployment in Tallaght, Dublin 24.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 83 and 84 together.

I am aware of the levels of unemployment in both Tallaght and Clondalkin. The present trend in unemployment levels nationally continues to fall and in the case of Tallaght and Clondalkin the numbers signing on at the local employment exchanges have fallen over the last four months.

The basis of Government policies on job creation has, of course, been the creation of an environment conducive to economic growth. Progress to date has been encouraging, the latest figures showing that 14,500 new industrial jobs were created in the nine months to 30 September 1988.

The promotion of industrial development in specific areas of the country is a day-to-day matter for the Industrial Development Authority, but I have been assured that they are doing their utmost to promote industry in both areas.
