Vol. 383 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Charges.

98.

asked the Minister of the Environment the total amount collected in charges, under the various headings, by all local authorities in the years 1985 to 1987 inclusive.

It is assumed that the Deputy's question refers to domestic service charges only, i.e. those for domestic water, refuse and sewerage. The information requested, as derived from local authority returns, is set out as follows:

Domestic Service Charge

Amounts collected in the years 1985 to 1987 inclusive

£ million

Water

50.546

Refuse

8.041

Sewerage

1.163

Note:

Because of the nature of some local authority accounting systems these figures may include some revenue from commercial service charges, while some refuse and/or sewerage receipts may be included under the heading ‘water'.

99.

asked the Minister for the Environment the total amount collected in industrial and commercial rates in 1987; the shortfall in the domestic rate support grants against the rates struck nationally in 1987; and the shortfall in the agricultural rates support grant against rates struck nationally in 1987.

The total amount of industrial and commercial rates collected by local authorities in 1987 was £170.725 million.

Because of the changes which have taken place in relation to domestic property and agricultural land over the past decade and the assumptions which would have to be made relating to variations in rate levels, standards of collection, etc., comparisons of the nature requested by the Deputy would be highly speculative.
