Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bovine TB.

118.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the recommended method of disposal of slaughtered bovine TB reactors; and if he has satisfied himself that all slaughtered reactors are disposed of in accordance with these conditions.

Under existing arrangements bovine TB reactors are subjected to ante- and post-mortem veterinary examination at meat export plants. As a result, all carcases and material deemed to be unfit for human consumption are denatured and disposed of to rendering plants.

I am satisfied that all identified reactors are slaughtered in accordance with these arrangements.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the incidence of bovine TB on a county and national basis for each year since 1983 to-date; the total moneys spent on the scheme to-date; and if he will give a breakdown of this expenditure in reference to the past three years.

I am informed by the Director of ERAD that the national incidence of bovine TB at the end of each testing programme since 1985 was as follows: 1985-6 — 4.37 per cent; 1986-7 — 7.19 per cent; 1987-8 — 5.13 per cent. Incidence on a county basis for the years in question is not immediately to hand and the amount of time required to prepare the information requested would not be justified.

Net expenditure on the disease eradication schemes (including administration) up to 31 December 1987 was £410 million. Provision for the current year is £46 million (including administration).

Over the past three years the breakdown in relation to disease eradication expenditure (£ million) was as follows:
