asked the Minister for the Marine if the EC has an intercommunity sea transport policy that allows islands off the mainland of Europe to compete on the same terms with areas on the mainland of Europe in the matter of transporting goods.

Discussions on the economic disadvantages arising from Ireland's geographic location vis-á-vis continental Europe are ongoing at the highest level. The consultative approach being adopted to the integrated structural planning in the context of 1992, the single market and expansion of the structural funds, is aimed at identifying the best possible approach to resolving such difficulties.
