The recently announced development strategy for the seafish industry for the period 1988-91 is designed to maximise the contribution to the national economy of this industry and, in particular, its contribution to the economy of coastal and island communities where other opportunities for income generation are limited. Special account will be taken in the implementation of this strategy to ensure that all viable opportunities for fishery and marine development in coastal and island communities, such as the inhabited islands off the Galway-Mayo coast, are fully exploited.
