Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Taxi Metering.

162.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in giving sanction to the metering of the Drogheda area, County Louth by the Drogheda Taximen's Association, the application for which was submitted by the Irish Taxi Federation on their behalf approximately 18 months ago.

Under the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations, 1963-1987, I have power to designate any area a taximeter area. Following a request from the Irish Taxi Federation for the introduction of a taximeter area in Drogheda, my Department sought the views of the Garda Síochána — who issue public hire vehicle licences — and of Drogheda Corporation — whose function it is to determine the number of licences which may be issued — on the proposals. A reply from the corporation is awaited.
