Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Programme.

168.

asked the Minister for the Environment the plans his Department have under the urban renewal programme for Clones, County Monaghan; and if he will make substantial grants available to Clones, having regard to its particular problems as a Border town.

169.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider extending the scheme of financial incentives for urban renewal to Listowel, County Kerry.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 168 and 169 together.

Fourteen urban centres have been designated under the Urban Renewal Act, 1986. This designation enables tax and rates incentives to be made available for qualifying projects in these areas. The scheme does not however involve any direct grant assistance.

I am aware of the case made on behalf of a number of other urban areas for designated area status. I have no proposals at present for the designation of areas additional to those already announced.
