Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Butchers' Employees Health and Safety.

175.

asked the Minister for Labour the procedures which exist to cover the health and safety of employees in butcher shops; and the compensation which is available to employees injured at work in a butcher's shop when protective clothing is not provided by the employer.

Current occupational safety and health legislation does not apply to employees in butcher shops. However, it is my intention to introduce in the Oireachtas during this session a safety, health and welfare at work Bill which will have the effect of extending legislative protection to all employees, including those employed in butcher shops.

The Department of Labour are not responsible for the payment of compensation to workers who are injured as a result of work activities. This matter is dealt with by the Department of Social Welfare through the occupational injury benefits scheme and also by the law courts who adjudicate on claims for civil damages.
