232.

asked the Minister for Health the total expenditure and the number of personnel involved in the administration and support services of the health services both centrally in his Department and locally in the health boards and other agencies.

The total administration costs of the Department of Health in 1988 are £8.0 million, of which £5.815 million represents the salaries of the 334 staff directly employed in the Department. Of this number 285 are employed directly in the provision of administration and support services, the remainder are attached to the general register office.

The total 1988 salaries of the 727 staff currently employed in health board central administration services will amount to £8.4 million approximately. This figure does not include personnel who work in hospitals and community care services in the direct provision of patient care. Total administration costs in the health boards, including central administration, will be £33.3 million in the current year.
