Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Aircraft Overflights.

85.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs arising from his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 73 of 9 December 1987, if he will update the information given on that occasion to the present date; the measures which are in force to ensure that none of the overflights in Irish airspace were carrying nuclear weapons, payloads of any kind or any dangerous substances; whether the total banning of overflights of all military aircraft will be considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Information regarding foreign military aircraft for which permission to overfly Ireland was sought in the period December 1987 to October 1988 is set out in the following tabular statement. As I said in a reply to a question on this subject on 16 February last, permission for such overflights is normally granted provided certain conditions are met. The most important of which are that the aircraft by unarmed, not carry arms, ammunition or explosives nor engage in intelligence-gathering. That the flights in question do not form part of military exercises or operations and that the aircraft shall not, without the express permission of the Minister for Tourism and Transport, carry any dangerous goods. No consideration is being given to the banning of overflights by military aircraft.
