Vol. 383 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Cork Flooding.

84.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether money will be made available to Cork County Council to alleviate flooding which has taken place in Percival Street and Newmarket Square, Kanturk, County Cork.

I have asked local authorities in areas affected by the recent severe weather to prepare reports on the extent of flood damage which occurred. I have also sought their views in relation to immediate remedial measures which they consider necessary and on the question of works which might usefully be undertaken to prevent a recurrence of flooding. In addition, I have asked the local authorities to carry out, as a matter of urgency, an investigation into the extent of flood damage to houses, to quantify the remedial work required and to identify householders who, through lack of insurance cover or otherwise, may now be in circumstances of hardship. When the authorities' reports are to hand, I will consider what action should be taken.

On Thursday last, I visited the Cork area which appears to be the most seriously affected by flooding to see at first hand the damage caused in the area. While in Cork, I had discussions with elected members and officials of the local authorities as well as with local people who were affected.
